N-Back Test

This is generally run as either 1-Back or 2-Back. The appearance of the test is the same in either condition, but the instructions are different. A series of letters appears one at a time on the screen.

In the 1-back condition, you should press the YES button whenever the letter is the same as the previous one (ignoring case), the NO button otherwise. Thus you should press YES to stimulus 6 in the sequence at right, and the NO button to all the other stimuli.

In the 2-back condition, you should press the YES button when the letter is the same as the last but one letter, the NO button otherwise. Thus you should press YES to stimulus 6 in the sequence at right, and the NO button to all the other stimuli.

This is a reaction time task, so you should always respond as quickly as possible, while avoiding errors. We record the reaction times averaged over the test, and the total number of errors.

It is also possible to configure the test a "0-back" (fixed target letter throughout the test) or "3-back" (pretty hard...)

This test can be run on a tablet computer or a Java-enabled mobile phone. The test normally lasts about three minutes.
